L&rsquo;instantan\u00e9 comprend des galaxies d&rsquo;\u00e2ges, de tailles, de formes et de couleurs vari\u00e9s. Les galaxies les plus petites et les plus rouges, environ 100, peuvent \u00eatre parmi les plus lointaines connues, existant alors que l&rsquo;univers n&rsquo;avait que 800 millions d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es. Les galaxies les plus proches &#8211; les spirales et elliptiques plus grandes, plus brillantes et bien d\u00e9finies &#8211; ont prosp\u00e9r\u00e9 il y a environ 1 milliard d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es, lorsque le cosmos avait 13 milliards d&rsquo;ann\u00e9es.<br>L&rsquo;image a n\u00e9cessit\u00e9 800 expositions prises au cours de 400 orbites de Hubble autour de la Terre. La dur\u00e9e totale d&rsquo;exposition \u00e9tait de 11,3 jours, entre le 24 septembre 2003 et le 16 janvier 2004.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">C\u2019est en observant ces images que l\u2019on peut retracer l\u2019histoire de la formation de l\u2019univers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-small-font-size\">Dans l\u2019espace, les distances sont gigantesques. Pour \u00e9viter des nombres trop grands, on mesure les distances en ann\u00e9es-lumi\u00e8re. Cela permet de donner le nombre d\u2019ann\u00e9es que doit parcourir la lumi\u00e8re pour aller d\u2019un point \u00e0 l\u2019autre. It is based on three exposures in ultra-violet, blue and red light, respectively. The colours of the different regions are well visible : the central areas contain older stars of reddish colour, while the spiral arms are populated by young, blue stars and many star-forming regions. Note the distorted companion galaxy on the left side, shaped like the greek letter \u00ab\u00a0theta\u00a0\u00bb. NGC 1232 is located 20\u00ba south of the celestial equator, in the constellation Eridanus (The River). The distance is about 100 million light-years, but the excellent optical quality of the VLT and FORS allows us to see an incredible wealth of details. At the indicated distance, the edge of the field shown corresponds to about 200,000 light-years, or about twice the size of the Milky Way galaxy. The image is a composite of three images taken behind three different filters: U (360 nm; 10 min), B (420 nm; 6 min) and R (600 nm; 2:30 min) during a period of 0.7 arcsec seeing. The field shown measures 6.8 x 6.8 arcmin.
